One of the obvious reasons why 4D is used is for its database engine. A database engine is a program that makes it possible to manage data.
If a database manages a large number of large objects it might make more sense to store the objects outside of the data file. A table in the database can be used to keep track of each file by storing a corresponding record that holds information about that file.
