Tech Note: Data File Log
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 6.7 | PLATFORM: Mac & Win
Published On: January 31, 2001

A 4D data file can comprise up to sixty-four 2 GB segments. If the first segment reaches its 2GB limit before additional segments are created you can run into problems that are time-consuming to fix. When you have remote clients, it can be difficult to know when they are approaching the 2GB limit. You may also find it useful to know if they have added any additional data segments, and how fragmented their data files are (the percentage of deleted records). Highly fragmented files can affect performance.

This technical note discusses a simple way to monitor the number and size of data segments and the fragmentation state of all tables.
