If a record in the current selection is being modified in another process at the same time that you are performing a sort, 4th Dimension uses the last saved value of the field in the sort. For example, if an employee's job title is in the process of being changed from "Engineer" to "Staff Engineer" while you are sorting on Job Title, the employee record will still be listed as "Engineer" and sorted with the engineer records. If you were to perform the sort again, after the record has been modified and saved, the new job title would be used and the employee record would be sorted as a Staff Engineer.
