Image maps have become a commonplace tool for web site designers. They allow one image to link to multiple addresses. The most common type of image map is known as a client side image map. Client side image maps consist of html in a web page that directs a user to a new address based on where they clicked on a particular part of the image. The other type of image map is known as a server side image map. Server side image maps appear to the average web user to work exactly the same as client side, however there is a slight difference. When you use server side image maps instead of html, information about where on the image the user clicked is sent to the server and the server determines what address to send the user to next.
