Tech Tip: 4D Tools crash while compacting or recovering by tag
PRODUCT: 4D Tools | VERSION: | PLATFORM: Mac & Win
Published On: March 18, 2004

Compatibility: version 6.8.x and 2003.x

If you are experiencing a crash with 4D Tools while compacting or recovering your data file by tag, then it is possible that 4D Tools doesn't have enough buffer space to temporary store the data before it gets written onto the disk. What you need to do is to increase the Maximum Cache size to a very large number (100 MB if you can). Once the maximum cache size has been increased, try performing the same operation with 4D Tools again.

Note: The maximum cache size can be set from the Database Properties (6.8) or Preferences (2003) if the structure is an interpreted structure. Otherwise, you will need to open your structure or merged application with 4D Customizer. Double-click on Properties Icon and you can increase the Maximum Cache size from there.

For Windows users: Microsoft's Data Execution Prevention (DEP) setting can be another reason why 4D Tools would crash. Currently, DEP is a feature of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008. If you are using one of those version of Windows and 4D Tools is crashing even after increasing the cache size, you may be suffering from a DEP related issue.
