Tech Tip: How to import Users and Groups from an older database?
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 2004 | PLATFORM: Mac & Win
Published On: March 31, 2006

If you need to import Users and Groups from a 4D database that was created with a previous major version of 4D, do the following:

1. Export Users and Groups from the original database.
2. Import those Users and Groups into a new/blank database created with the *older* version of 4D.
3. Upgrade the database with the newer version of 4D.
4. Export users and groups from the upgraded database.
5. Import those users and groups into the target database.

For example, given a 4D 2003 database named "Invoice System 2003" and a 4D 2004 database named "Invoice System 2004".

1. Export Users and Groups from the "Invoice System 2003" database.
2. Import those Users and Groups into a new/blank database created with 4D 2003.
3. Upgrade the new/blank database with 4D 2004.
4. Export users and groups from the upgraded, new/blank database.
5. Import those users and groups into the "Invoice System 2004" database.

We do not recommend, importing a Users and Groups file (.4UG) created with a previous version of 4D into a newer version.
