A named selection is an ordered list of records - a set is not.

A named selection requires 4 bytes per record in the selection - a set requires one bit for each record in the table (irrespective of how many records are in the set).

A set can be saved to disk - a named selection cannot.

Sets support INTERSECTION, UNION and DIFFERENCE operations - named selections do not.
