Tech Tip: Keeping Keyboard Shortcuts Across All 4D v11 SQL Releases
PRODUCT: 4D Developer | VERSION: 11.2 | PLATFORM: Mac & Win
Published On: November 3, 2008

4D v11 SQL gives you the freedom to create and/or modify keyboard shortcuts by modifying the 4DShortcuts.xml file. You can find the file located in the "4D Extensions" folder which is inside the 4D application package on Mac and at the same level as the 4D.exe file on Windows.

However, every time you install a new release of 4D (i.e. Hotfix versions) you will need to modify or move your customized 4DShortcuts.xml. Putting it in the "4D Extensions" folder of the newer version sets the keyboard shortcuts for the new version.

It is possible to avoid this and always have your customized keyboard shortcuts working. Place the customized 4DShortcuts.xml in the user preferences folder. This folder is located in different places on different operating systems and can be found as follows:

Windows Vista
C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\4D

Windows XP
C:\Documents and settings\user_name\Application Data\4D

Mac OS X
Macintosh HD/users/user_name/library/Preferences/4D
