Tech Tip: Upgrading 4D and registering your database as a service
PRODUCT: 4D Server | VERSION: 11 | PLATFORM: Mac OS X
Published On: January 28, 2009

When a database running on Mac OS is registered to run as a service, if the version of 4D is ever upgraded, the database needs to be re-registered as a service. This applies for "dot" releases such as upgrading from 4D v11 SQL Release 2 (11.2) to 4D v11 SQL Release 3 (11.3).

When a database is registered as a service, a UNIX executable file is created and saved in the folder:

Mac HD:Library:StartupItems

The location of the 4D Server executable is part of the information that gets saved in this file. Typically when you upgrade the version of 4D, the folder path to the new 4D Server executable will be different. Since the path to the executable is different, it will need to be updated in the UNIX executable. While this can be done by manually editing the file with a text editor, it is recommended that you un-register and then re-register the database as a service.
