Tech Tip: What is 'Server Core'?
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 11.3 | PLATFORM: Win
Published On: January 28, 2009

The certification matrix for 4D v11 SQL (11.3) lists that it is certified to run on Windows Server 2008, including the 64 bit version, but that it is not compatible with the 'Server Core' option of Windows Server 2008.

What is 'Server Core'?
According to the Microsoft documentation: "The Server Core installation option is a new option that you can use for installing Windows Server 2008. A Server Core installation provides a minimal environment for running specific server roles, ..." The Microsoft documentation then goes on to list the 9 specific server roles.

How can I determine if I am running Windows Server with the 'Server Core' option?
Typically, if a Windows Server 2008 installation is running with the 'Server Core' option, then you will only be able to manage the server through the command prompt. When using the 'Server Core' option, the traditional full graphical user interface (which includes the Explorer shell), is not installed.

For more information see the Microsoft atricle describing the 'Server Core' option at the Microsoft TechNet website:
