Tech Tip: Disallowing "Stop" Backup Button in Non-4D Password Applications
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 11.5 | PLATFORM: Mac & Win
Published On: February 19, 2010

The standard behavior of the backup process is that only Designer and Administrator users can cancel a backup remotely when running 4D in Client/Server. All other users get a message that a backup is occurring, but the Stop button is greyed out and cannot be used.

This can cause a problem for developers who do not employ the 4D Password system, and instead roll their own. It is common to never set the Designer password, and simply manage all users through your own custom password system. In this case all users would appears as Designer to the 4D engine and would therefore have the power to stop backups.

To avoid this developers can set up a Default user for their database from the Access subsection of the Application Preferences. By setting up a Default user with a blank password the 4D Password dialog will not open on startup and you can still use your custom password system.

You must also add a password to the Designer user of the database to enable the 4D Password system. If you wish to log in as Designer or Administrator in the future you can open your 4D application while holding the shift key down, which automatically opens the 4D Password dialog.
