Tech Tip: Why does 4D Server quit when a Windows user logs out?
PRODUCT: 4D Server | VERSION: 12 | PLATFORM: Win
Published On: April 29, 2011

(Note that this Tech Tip applies to all versions of 4D Server.)

It is possible on Windows for it to appear that 4D Server quits unexpectedly after a Windows user logs out. More particularly this can occur if said Windows user was the last person logged into the machine. In fact 4D Server has not quit at all; it was closed by Windows.

Various versions of Windows include a feature to automatically reboot the machine if no users are logged in and there are pending Windows updates.

Checking the Event Log may reveal a message like the following:

"The process [...]svchost.exe ... has initiated the restart of computer ... on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned). Reason code: 0x80020002. Shutdown Type: restart."

In order to prevent this type of reboot, this feature must be disabled. For example on Server verions of Windows the "Windows Update" Group Policy key should be set to "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations".
