Tech Tip: Terminology for Mac OS X application types
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 12 | PLATFORM: Mac OS X
Published On: December 16, 2011

Here is some basic terminology with regard to application types on Mac OS X:

  • Universal Binary - Executable code can be ran on PowerPC or Intel hardware

  • PowerPC - Executable code runs on PowerPC hardware or Rosetta* (emulation) on Intel hardware

  • Intel - Executable code can only run on Intel hardware

* Rosetta emulates the PowerPC architecture; when an application is running in this environment it can be considered as if it is running on PowerPC hardware.

It is important to understand this because as of version 12, 4D and it's suite of applications are Intel only, including the ODBC Driver. This means that the PowerPC architecture is no longer supported.
