The nature of the Internet and the World Wide Web is a very open one. By default communications that take place over the Internet are unsecure. Communications between a web server and a client’s web browser will hop between many networks and other devices. As designed, the reliability afforded by these interlinked networks more than compensated for the additional risk of communication interception. The proliferation of wifi networks, both secured and unsecured, has added another layer of communications. All of these represent an opportunity for interception of the data that is being transmitted to and from the server. For some use cases this is more than acceptable; this is especially true of sites that are essentially public. Indeed, there is little to no reason to implement many, or any, of the following security features discussed in this session if the site contains no private data. However, many sites, especially those being deployed by a 4D web server contain private data that needs to be kept private. Whether this data is medical records, credit card information, or any other type of data that ought to be protected the 4D web server has the means to keep private data private. There are multiple ways of securing data with the 4D web server; this session will discuss several of them.
