Tech Tip: Installing HelperTool on Mac OS X
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 13.4 | PLATFORM: Mac OS X
Published On: March 27, 2014

4D uses a utility named HelperTool when publishing ports below 1024 on Mac OS X. If the HelperTool is missing (not installed) and the database is set to publish the HTTP Server on startup via the Database Setting, an error will be presented stating 'The database cannot be published'. This is the expected behavior when the HelperTool is not yet installed.

To install the HelperTool you must perform one of the following actions:

  • Click the 'Start HTTP Server' button from the HTTP tab of the 4D Server Administration Window

  • Choose the 'Start Web Server' menu item from the Run menu of 4D.app

  • Use the WEB START SERVER command

If the HelperTool is not yet installed, and the HTTP is set to listen on a port below 1024, performing one of the three actions above will trigger the installation of the HelperTool.
