Tech Tip: Unique Log File Names
PRODUCT: 4D | VERSION: 15 R3 | PLATFORM: Mac & Win
Published On: January 22, 2016

Starting with 4D v15R3, log files now have a timestamp appended to the files' names. With this new feature, this removes the situation of older log files being overwritten everytime an MSC scan is performed and losing the information of the older logs.

From MSC the new feature is automatically enabled and occurs when a Verify, Compact, or Repair is performed and a log file is generated.

When using 4D commands to perform the task, the new feature is automatically disabled and only includes the timestamp when the new Timestamp log file name constant is used. These commands are Compact data file, VERIFY DATA FILE, and VERIFY CURRENT DATA FILE.

It should also be mentioned that by adding the timestamp, numerous log files may be generated and it is up to the user to maintain the files. The files will still be located at the same location in the Logs folder.
