A datafile that has been opened in v17 is still compatible with 4D v16 and 4D v15. Converting a database from v15 and v16 to v17 will only change the structure, while converting from all versions prior will convert both th structure and datafile. This means that if a copy of a structure in one of the copatible older versions is maintained and then another copy is made and upgraded to v17 it is always possible to revert to the earlier versions if needed.

Also, when converting a v16 database to v17 database the indexes will not need to be rebuilt, however older versions converting up will require an index rebuild.
